a new backpack...

remember this?

*sigh*

it's been lost.

i definitely think i was more heartbroken than leo.  more about the contents than the actual backpack (old matchbox cars from his uncle!!!).

but we had to move onwards and upwards.  no sense in giving it all too much value... i didn't want leo to be upset about it, so i needed to move on, as well.  so plans were made.  here's a little preview... a new backpack...

with a surprise inside!

i started with some old t-shirts.  got some zippers, freezer paper, and an old curtain.  (that curtain has been sneaking its way into a lot of projects these days... there's just so much of it!).  and i got to work.  i knew we'd be flying soon, and i was wanting to make a car mat for leo to play with, and now, with the missing backpack, thought i could somehow combine the two.

and... here it is... a backpack that opens up into a car mat!

it's already been to a couple restaurants, the shoe store, and will be perfect for the airplane!

now that it's made, i kind of feel like it was time for a new one anyway.

i linked up with creative me monday over at the southern institute!

and...

  17. Wow and double wow- this rocks! What a clever surprise inside! And I think my very fav part is the strap for the straps in front! Both of my little guys struggle keeping the drawstring backpacks I've made them on... a strap like that will solve the problem! Thanks for sharing! :)

  26. I have just made some toys car stuffs for my little mans Christmas present and I had been searching for some ideas of a bag to make for them to live in. This would be perfect, I'm going to try to make one this week! Would you mind if I pinned your picture!

  27. @ heathorock... thank you! i used several t-shirts... one for the outside, one for the road... another for the pieces on the inside. it really depends on how you'd like to do it and what you can use to recycle! i think my zippers were 12", but that depends, too, on what size you want to make it!

@ lucy x... i'm glad you like it, and thanks for asking if i'd mind if you pinned it... please do! if you can please mention this link in the pin, that would be great!

  29. @alhsjej... i used the curtain fabric for the inside... and that's exactly what kept the t-shirt from stretching too much! any stable fabric will do, though :)
